Windsor Great Park has now been reopened following restrictions imposed during the Foot and Mouth outbreak. The following posts are retained here by way of
record.

A sad sight. The magnificent Long Walk usually enjoyed by

hundreds of visitors on a beautiful day like this, deserted,

except for the deer up by the Copper Horse.

As a precaution, Windsor Great Park was closed to visitors as a result of the nearby FMD outbreak near Egham.

The land at Runnymede was taped off after the FMD outbreak in the Summer. The pastures on farms where FMD is confirmed can be restricted for up to 12 months

However, if the farmers choose to undergo a process called sentinel restocking, restrictions can be lifted sooner....

Apparently not so. While at Runnymede the other day I noticed that there were cattle in the fields once more, yet the warning signs and tape remained across

Thank you for your email about Foot and Mouth Disease restrictions in some farms in Surrey.

According to information from Animal Health and Surrey Country Council, there are about 30 parcels of land under restrictions following the Foot and Mouth

As you point out, some people will continue to ignore the restriction notices. I would suggest that if you are concerned as to whether a particular area is
restricted or not, then a call to DEFRA to confirm the location's status is the best option. As to whether you will get a 'DEFRA assurance',
following the debacle that was the management of the F&M issue by DEFRA, I'd be inclined to take any 'assurance' with a very big pinch of salt!

That is very interesting, many thanks. I was under the impression that the FMD virus remained viable for about a month in the open, triple it for safety, hence
my belief that the closures were now no longer relevant... but that is a 'townie' for you!

What is more to the point is that most visitors to the countryside will now almost certainly ignore the restrictions - they certainly did when the infection
was at its peak - thinking that the matter is now history.

lot of other locations also. I think it is about time that all the paraphernalia was cleared away, especially as we are being told that this plastic, similar
to plastic bags, are a hazard to wild life and is generally unsightly. Quite apart from the fact that at any time in the future, they may be needed for real
