Made a visit to Slough Library on Saturday and found the advert for Mrs S Barrow - Royal Albert Laundry. The advert dated Noember 1907 stated that it had been established for over 30 years and patronised by King Edward VII (when Prince of Wales), Prince & Princess Louis of Battenburg, H.S.H. Princess Adolphus of Teck, Prince and Princess Alexander of Took, Princess Radisville, His Highness the Maharajah of Cooch Behar, Count Blucher and Windsor Castle. Hi cousin Chris

I was told by my uncle Jim before he died that his mother and aunt Em both worked at the laundry and I found my grandmother (on Dad's side) lodging with other laundry workers in 1901 census. Incidentally Great Aunt Em got paid extra because she was a "finisher". I seem to remember Dad talking about the Sunlight Laundry when he lived in Victor Road as a boy.

When I wrote the article about my father Joe Bourne working at the Royal Albert Laundry, I was unaware of Mrs S.Barrows until Roger Harding wrote his article concerning the fire at the laundry. Recently I saw an advert in the Midweek Slough Observer (dated Wednesday 18th June).
In the "Just Like Yesterday" section there was an advert dated January 22nd, 1908 of Butlers Store in Windsor. But beneath this was an advert for Mrs S. Barrows, High - Class Family Laundress, Royal...

1950 Kelly lists the Sun Ray Laundry in Victor Road. Well remembered... In the 1930s they had a shop listed in St Leonards Road too.

I agree Sunlight sounds laundry like - Sunlight Soap, Port Sunlight, etc!

I feel sure the laundry was called SunRAY, not Sunlight. We lived nearby until the mid-1950s.

Update: I found out this morning that the owners of this site are about to submit a planning application to convert this land to residential use. A block of 6 flats and 2 townhouses on St Leonards Road plus another 17 townhouses to the rear planned for this site! This seems excessive given the size of this plot. That being said, most modern developments do seem to find a way to make the most for each cubic metre.

Anyone know what is happening to the Sunlight Laundry site on (131-139) St Leonards Road? It closed last year but I haven't heard anything about what is happening to this. I guess this would be ripe for residential development. As far as I am aware no planning applications have been posted on the RBWM website.
