While attending the first Flood Open Day of the FRAGs held to mark the release of Clive Onions flood report we were asked if we could be less contentious and try to work with the Environment Agency in order to help improve the situation for the future.

Will you allow me to explain to your readers what I perceive as an injustice to the flood victims and an attempt to mislead?

The recently revised estimated table of the Taplow weir operation is a jumbled mishmash of figures which could hardly be described as factual or reliable.

Was this new table devised and produced by Environment Agency experts?

Mr C Onions' summary of the forthcoming FRAGs report, is creating and courting controversy, questions are being asked on its independence.

The Chairman, Mr Onions states, "Many staff from the Environment Agency has been involved in assembling the factual information."

In a letter from the Environment Agency it states 144 is 50% of 215. Is this the type of factual information he bases his report on?

Is this the same EA that built and operated the Jubilee River, and has failed to dredge the Thames for flood defence purposes for the last ten years? It surely is!

I am desperately resisting the urge to say 'I told you so'!

As Chairman of the the Parish Council in 1992, I represented Datchet at the Public Inquiry into the Maidenhead, Windsor and Eton Flood Alleviation Scheme.

In my summary and closing speech to the Inspector I stated "It is still a matter of concern that there is the possibility that the flood banks restraining flows above ground level will be inadequate."

Last January many houses on the River Thames, downstream from Windsor, which had never been flooded before, were inundated. This observation is based on information supplied by the Environment Agency for the 2003 flood event.

It is known some properties were flooded internally by as little as 4 inches. With a higher degree of control some of these properties could have escaped the internal flooding.

When the Jubilee River was being planned the design documents stated that flood relief schemes should always be started at the seaward end. By not following this dictum serious flooding occurred either side of Windsor and Maidenhead.
