			<description><![CDATA[ It is possible that the Royal Oak in the early 30s was &#39;let go&#39; as it was known that the area was due to be redeveloped. There are other views of the
area in Thames Street just before the George V Memorial was built in early 1937 and at about the same time the current <em>Royal Oak</em> was built. The link

			<description><![CDATA[ Two good photos of the Royal Oak.....I looked at the first one and thought, oh, there&#39;s the usual &#39;jetstream trails&#39; in the sky, only to have a
closer look and see the gentleman with a carriage, parked on the right.  Finally, reading the caption I learned it was taken in 1910.....The top, 1910, shot,
makes the Royal Oak look more well-maintained than the 30&#39;s one.  Perhaps standards had slipped by then.  The house adjoining the Royal Oak has
deteriorated and the pub building... ]]></description>

A very early view of the Women&#39;s Ward at the King Edward VII Hospital. Postmarked March 25th 1910, the card was sent by &#39;Sister Alexandra&#39; to Mrs
Gilles in South Fleet in Kent with the message &#39;Sister Alice is not so well&#39;.

			<description><![CDATA[ <p>Using the 3D viewer, the whole scene comes to life and gives the photograph depth. Without the viewer the picture seems &#39;flat&#39; and not as life-like.

Looking at the hand-coloured version, the colourist has picked out the hat of the young lady sitting infront of her friend. In the black and white view, the
hat is merged with her hair. The colour certainly brings the Curfew Tower&#39;s roof right into the picture.

the picture itself, the construction or alteration dates of buildings, copyright dates, tree growth, period costumes or design features being useful aids.
Rarely is the picture actually dated!

Following on from the Thames Side image earlier in this thread, here is a view of the level crossing just outside the Southern Railway Station on the road
between Romney Lock and the Home Park. It is probably twenty or so years earlier than the Thames Side image but I doubt much had changed in that time. Nice
