Greetings,Recently, I learned about Herne the Hunter and the Windsor Oak. I understand that this tree fell of old age on August 31, 1863. According to one source, Queen Victoria led the nation in mourning its demise.I'm wondering if there is any truth to this story. If you are aware of any documentation, or can recommend a person or a source, I would greatly appreciate it.Thank you for your attention.

The missing story is, from memory, that the 1795 'felling' was an accident and to disguise the loss of Herne's Oak another was appointed in its
place. It is this pretender that fell in 1863.

Thanks for your enquiry. The tree that died in the 1860s is (in Lady Jane Robert's excellent book 'Royal Landscape') described "probably mistakenly" as Herne's Oak.

Another tree, felled in 1795, was also known as Herne's Oak!!!
