Thanks for the info Thamesweb - interesting that the Waterman's Arms only became a pub in the mid 1800s. I'll definitely have to see if I can find that book myself too.

The book I had in mind was Selina Ballance's A Town Called Eton and there are several references to The Waterman's Arms. On page 40 Ms. Ballance writes 'The building in Brocas Street which is now The Waterman's Arms was bought by the parish at auction on 12 July 1792 for £485. There is a reproduction of the auction bill on page 37, plate 14, where lot 3 is described as 'a large, well-built freehold dwelling-house adjoining the above [Lot 2 a small freehold...

Thamesweb, I don't suppose you've got any old photos in your archive of the Watermans Arms/Eton College boathouse? It'd be interesting to see how that side of the river has changed over the years

The only 'historical' info. I can give qezkc is that I met my husband in The Waterman's, and, so far, so good!!! Well, 48 years isn't bad!! The Landlord at that time, around 1958, was 'Oddi', he belonged, I think, to the local boating family and quite often 'punted' us across the Thames for a few old pence. I know that isn't strictly the information you asked for, but, well, The Waterman's has always held a special spot in 'our history'.

Somewhere I have a book which might cover the Waterman's Arms, but it is not where it should be so I am waiting for it to wave or whistle or otherwise make its presence felt, whereupon I can check the history.

I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding the history of the Waterman's Arms Pub in Brocas Street, Eton? From what I've been able to find out up to now, it seems to have quite a colourful history, at one time being where victims of the Black Death were shipped upriver and stored and also at one time being a poorhouse (is this true?). If anyone has any information regarding it, or photos of the pub itself and its immediate vicinity, it would be very gratefully...
