I will send it off immediately to the address that will arrive with the notification from Paypal. That presumes you have placed your address on file with Paypal. They've 'brought to life' all the stereo images on the forum website. Without them, the pictures look 'flat', but using them, everything's jumped into reality!! I looked at the Guards' Band marching down Castle Hill, and seeing this picture through the viewers, saw a very small guardsman in the centre, behind the front 'drummers'.....are these 'guardsmen' boys, perhaps, because to join the Guards regiments there's always been a minimum height regulation. In 'A view of The East Terrace', there's a huge pot with flowers hanging down from it. Using the viewers it gives the impression that if you stretched out your hand, you could touch them. Amazing to know these stereo images were taken so long ago.

It is by Francis York, and I believe dates from the 1860s. It is certainly early (in photographic terms) given the very simple dating method of assessing the exposure time. In this view the horses head has almost disappeared, and so too have at least two individuals behind the market stalls. This might at first seem irrelevant, but imagine the scene. A man has arrived with a lot of very large equipment in polished mahogany and brass and almost certainly a covered cart too loaded with photographic processing equipment. The stall holders possibly know, or will certainly have been told, that this is the very latest hi-tech, picture-making, equipment which takes only a couple of minutes. "But while the picture is being taken you must keep still," the photographer says "I will tell you when you can move again!" But the horse ignores him, and so too do the individuals behind the stalls who, for one reason or another, probably boredom, possibly concern for their spiritual well-being, chose to move off at the wrong moment. But Francis York persists, maybe with several 'exposures' a few minutes apart as he reloads with fresh plates each time. And this is the result that has been handed down to us. I love it! With some detective work it might be possible to identify the stall holders, given that we should be able to make out what is being sold, and who had a license at that time to sell those items from a market stall in the High Street. Easy peasy! Some readers of this forum already have purchased our simple, inexpensive yet effective stereoviewers so that a three-dimensional effect can be observed from the image on screen. if you would like a viewer, please see the posts earlier in this thread.

Indeed there is often somebody placed strategically by the photographer in many of the stereo photos, just to give the stereo buyer their money's worth!

Posts: 1595 (11/06/08 08:32:01) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	This view across to Eton (not Eaton as printed on the card!) is fairly common as a postcard, but this is the first example I have found as a stereoview. The definition of the image has deteriorated slightly, the RH image more than the LH, but I live in hopes of finding a crisper sharper image. In the meantime the view is of value in that it shows the area around the Southern Railway Station in, I would estimate, the 1890s. The stereo effect of the chimneys is still quite good, and it is possible to make out The Cobbler - the pathway in the middle of the river which curves up at the upstream end - which the bargeman's horse would have used as it pulled the barges from Romney Lock towards the bridge. At the end of the Cobbler the horse would have been forced into the river and made to swim across to the Windsor bank before pulling the barge up to the bridge and onwards upstream. The image below, from the Eton side, is from a similar period, and a larger version can be viewed by clicking on it.
