Does anyone remember the clock in the pavement?? It was put 'in' the pavement outside a jewellers I think, at the top of Castle Hill. I can't
remember seeing it when using a cashpoint there a few years ago, so does anyone know what happened to it and what replaced it, if anything? Who's idea was
it in the first place? I don't think I ever actually checked the time by this clock, I'd look up at The Curfew Tower and use that.

It was Dysons' the Jewellers clock. The shop was at 9 Thames St and they had a royal warrant, clockmakers and jewellers to the Queen.
As I recall the glass was badly scuffed on a regular basis and so had to be removed and polished or replaced regularly. They advertised as 'The firm with the clock in the pavement'. 
This picture was taken in 1961 shortly after the Civic Trust scheme to redecorate all the shops in the High Street and Thames Street. Dysons had for many years a music shop (selling records and musical instruments) with the jewellers shop next door.

Was it really that many years ago???? I asked my husband when he came in and he said, as you have, that it was 'Dysons', and thankyou for the pic of
Dysons.....Seeing that bus stop, oh, I spent many hours, sorry, minutes that seemed like hours, waiting for buses there. I suppose that's gone too, and is
Dysons still 'around' or daren't I ask? I bought my one and only guitar in Dysons. It was £4.00 that was a lot of money then. I was earning £2.75
a week at Horlicks, so saved weekly for anything I 'had to have'. With the guitar I bought a music book written by Bert Weeden, (?). I taught myself
the 4 chords, then, my brother somehow managed to produce a tea chest. He fixed a broom handle to it with string attached to the top of the handle and the
side of the tea chest.....we borrowed our Mother's washboard, or scrubbing board, it was metal so had to borrow from her as well, two or three metal
thimbles.....I can only imagine the noise we made, I know it hurt my ears... I remember playing the skiffle music outside in the garden, and Fred, our
neighbour, who was a great chap, just stood and laughed, in amazement I suppose. Skiffle was 'the thing' on the radio, television and
'records'.....we had to have a go.......when we bought our first records, there was a shop down Peascod Street, and I saw it on your photos in the
Norman Wisdom 'then and now' section. (that's excellent). We walked into the shop, ask for a certain record, 78 rpm., then went into a booth to
listen to it.....I bought Johnnie Mathis singing 'Misty'...which I still have!!!! You see, your one photo of Dysons shop has set us thinking about our
youth.....My husband bought many Humphrey Lyttelton records, and we were so sad to hear the announcement of his death on the radio this morning....great man,
who will be missed.
