When it gets to lunchtime I often get a salad or a sandwich in Marks and Sparks and sit outside their shop on the window-seats, but this gets a bit boring and on a cold day it's not enough, so, please can anyone suggest a restaurant or pub where my husband and I can sit down to a good meal????? We'd like somewhere in the town centre, not too expensive but as long as the menu and food are good, that's okay. We don't mind walking across Windsor Bridge into Eton, as walking back up Castle Hill after the meal would help walk off the calories! So come on you present Windsorians, where should we go to eat ???? thanks for any suggestions.

GBK in the station is the best burger in town, hand made, much better than the fast food joints. Nando's where Burger King used to be opposite the Castle is good food for the price. Weatherspoons is surprisingly cheap, quick and easy for lunch, however, only go to the King and Castle one on Castle Hill. Subway in William Street next to the Nationwide does a good sandwich and makes a change from M&S. The pub opposite the Riverside station does okay food for lunch. There are so many cafés in the Central station that are worth a look. EAT, La Tasca for tapas, HAHA does bar food. Spoilt for choice really.

Next trip up to Windsor, we'll try one or two of your suggestions. Incidentally, my Mum, Daisy Elliott, (now sadly passed away), was the cook in The William IV and my late Mother-in-law, Ivy Larkin, waitressed in The Royal Oak. So, perhaps we could start our trials with these two pubs. My Mum's steak and kidney puddings and pies were always well received by the patrons of The William IV. Her 'boss' at that time was a Mr. Campling, he, I believe, later managed the pub opposite The Long Walk in King's Road, Was that, perhaps, The Two Brewers?? Too many pubs in Windsor to remember them all. I've eaten in one eatery in the station opposite The Castle. Good atmosphere in there and always lots of happy, chatty relaxed people. I went into Daniels last Summer, (and many previous), only to find the coffee-shop there full up. I think they could extend the area there because there's always lots of people looking for somewhere decent to have a drink and a snack. Is there anywhere a good fish and chips restaurant, I wonder? You can at least take your lunch away and eat it along the Riverfront if you can find a decent chippie. Thanks again for your ideas.

The Waterman's Arms is where I met my husband.......we celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary on 2nd April, and your suggestion has really stirred up some ancient but happy memories for us........the landlord at that time was 'Oddy'.....I don't remember his Christian/Surname, but that's what all of us called him....I think he used to run the punt across from The Brocas to the Windsor side of the river in those days. My husband tells me that 'Oddy' was from 'a boating family'.......we'll certainly have a walk across the bridge and pay them a visit.

My Mother was working with Mr and Mrs Campling when they had the William IV, at the bottom of Castle Hill.....they had a beautiful little daughter...I can't remember her 'real' name, and I say 'real' because my Mother always called her 'Fairy Isobel', she was a sweetie and came down to Polegate with my parents on a day trip....thanks again, and I'm glad he's 'hopefully, still with us'....
