I am getting heartily tired of major UK companies trying to placate their customers by admitting to having learnt lessons. It just isn't good enough. The
reason why top executives are paid phenomenal sums is because they are supposed to know what they are doing. They are being paid for their expertise and
experience of lessons ALREADY LEARNT earlier in their careers. Learning more lessons at this stage is NOT what they are paid for.
The BBC is now reporting that staff are claiming that their training was insufficient. That lack of training is obvious. But what mainstream, international company, launching a brand new international facility in front of the world's press, are dumb enough to commence operations without checking and rechecking that absolutely every staff member knows what they are doing, how to solve problems at the first opportunity, have back up procedures in place, and ONLY THEN saying "Right, we are ready. Let's go."
Can anyone explain why the terminal operation wasn't phased in gradually? Could it be that it was cheaper to try and hit the ground running? And hang the repercussions if it goes wrong?
One lesson that Willie Walsh has yet to learn is that very highly paid executive management must resign if they fail to come up to scratch.
