The original thread for this item is here and includes earlier information and comments. This morning I went up to the town, on a very warm and sunny day, to watch the parade. Herewith my report, video and pictures. The moment the troops emerged from Victoria Barracks in Victoria Street the crowds, and they were substantial, started clapping, cheering and waving. It was impressive. I filmed the parade from on high in the multi-storey car park, and after they had passed walked up to the Guildhall across Bachelors Acre and through the Castle Hotel Car Park. After a few minutes the parade arrived from its circuit down to the riverside and the warm welcome was renewed by an even bigger crowd. I am delighted that Windsorians, and those who had travelled into town to watch the parade, reacted so warmly towards the troops. It was a moving experience and I am glad I was there to witness it. Got to say they look proud .

The BBC coverage was good too. The Battalion was 'marching through Windsor, claiming their right to have the Freedom of the Town', so their commentator said. 'They were marching with fixed bayonets....' Very emotional to watch these young men, who are obviously very proud of their regiment, The Colours, and their country. You caught the mood very well and I've got to watch it again....I have sent a link to my granddaughter so that she can, perhaps, appreciate how these young men, of her age, choose to serve in the army and how proud they are to do so. My friend did go to the parade and spoke to a couple who had driven from Leicestershire. They had gone to see their grandson, who is a serving member of the Coldstream Guards. She said they were very proud and happy to be there. She said she too was emotional and said how young the soldiers looked...A great day for the Coldstream Guards, wouldn't you say?

The DVD will feature clips from other events from throughout the year, all in much better quality than can be offered currently on the RWWS.

She sent a leaflet which she'd been handed while waiting for the parade, showing, on the front, three guardsmen in an armoured car in Afghanistan. On the back are three pics. One is of a Coldstream medic treating an injured child, the second is of a ' young Guardsman still smiling after being shot in the leg', and the last is The Mortar Platoon in action against the Taliban (Photograph courtesy of Soldier Magazine). Seeing the troops, in colour, really brings it all home. It's the piece at the bottom of the leaflet, which made her smile, it states 'Interested in a career in the Coldstream Guards? Call-----------, well, as she said, she is 'getting on a bit', and a granny too, so she won't be phoning them!!! Her sister was handed a leaflet as well, and she's in her 70's, well, you're as young as you feel I suppose.

General Sir Richard Dannatt, Chief of the General Staff at the Ministry of Defence has written to the Mayor, Cllr Leo Walters, to express his sincere gratitude for the council's Welcome Home banner and event on Saturday April 26 and to say how much they were appreciated by the service men and women themselves. He wrote: "There has been a lot of media coverage in recent months on the issue of the support shown by the Nation to the Armed Forces, but not all of the reporting made it clear that the Army, indeed all the Armed Forces, are enormously grateful to those who do help - and I know that Windsor has been deeply supportive of the Army, and the Household Division, for a long time. In many respects, it is the things that cost nothing that are the ones that are most important - a friendly greeting in the street, a prayer, a reference in the local paper or people paying their respects to those soldiers who have fallen in battle. I also know that your support for the soldiers of 1st Battalion The Coldstream Guards was greatly appreciated by their families - it is, after all, they who are the unsung heroes in these operationally busy times, and for them to know that their local community supports their loved ones is a major fillip. "Thank you once again. Your example is, I hope, an inspiration to others." Cllr Walters said he was extremely pleased by the letter from the professional head of the British Army. He said: "The Welcome Home parade was the Royal Borough's way of demonstrating - on behalf of everyone in our community - the great debt we owe to the service men and women who serve our country in very dangerous circumstances. To receive a letter of thanks from General Sir Richard Dannatt is very much valued by all councillors and officers who played a part in the Windsor celebrations. "With so many members of the forces continuing to serve in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places of war and conflict, we must remember them in our thoughts and prayers and continue to show our support and appreciation."
