Claude Watham Obituary
We have just heard belatedly of the death of Claude Watham. He was a well known film and TV director and perhaps his best known works were Swallows and Amazons and Cider with Rosie.
The connection with Windsor is that back in the 1940s, when the pictures were removed from the Waterloo Chamber during the war, a very young Claude Watham (aged about 16) designed and painted pantomime characters in the spaces left. This coincided with a Christmas pantomime that Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret put on to entertain local children and staff. I understand that these paintings were retained when the original paintings were returned to their proper position in the Waterloo Chamber after the war.
