Name of shop in Victoria Street? |

|
Can anybody remember the name of a shop that used to be in Victoria Street years ago, or might have been through an archway off Victoria Street? It was a shop that sold everything - wood, bits of windows, bric-a-brac, etc. It was quite well known - everybody knew about it. A little chap called Joe who had a barrow used to work for him (although as he had a barrow, he used to do jobs for lots of people). My sister & I can remember the shop but can't remember the name.

I have had a look in several Kelly Directories but cannot find a likely shop name in Victoria Street, but I am sure that the 'Joe' you mention is Joe Quartermain who used to move furniture on a barrow, almost running along the street in his plimsolls as he went about his business.

Yes you're right about Joe. The shop may not have been in Victoria Street itself - just somewhere in that area.

Old Joe and his barrow. | ||

My husband and I, (no, we're not that couple), remember old Joe literally running along the roads, always whistling, always wearing white plimsolls and his
cap, we didn't ever see him without it......he was always around, and everyone knew and loved him.....always happy and busy, and nodded his head as he
'ran' past us......where did he live? where was he running to? when was he born? he always looked the same to us, never aged and never put on
weight.....at Crosses Corner the traffic always stopped to let Joe pass....well, he wasn't going to stop, was he!!

I have a series of photos of Hulls, inside and out, taken by my father before they closed. One day they will be included on the RWWS... Apparently one of the
oddments they had in their workshop was the engine, or at least part of the engine from the tank that was on display on Bachelors Acre in the 20s and 30s.
