I think it dates from about 1900 or even the 1890s. You couldn't walk all the way to Windsor Bridge on the Prom until the 1930s. Thanks for a great Windsor site!

The building on the far-left was, I think, where a friend of our's held his wedding reception years ago. There were French doors opening onto a very small platform where we stood, looking at the river and the bridge. We hadn't seen that particular view of the Thames or Windsor Bridge before. Is that building still there and is it still a restaurant, hotel ? Interesting to know too that the walk along the promenade and up to the bridge wasn't there til the 1930's. Windsor has changed gradually over the years.

Her is a better view of the building... I understand there were some difficulties a little while ago but have not heard what the situation is now. I thought the restaurants on either side of the bridge on the Eton side, were run by the same company. Anybody know the latest?

I think if you wait a little the picture will eventually arrive. It is too large to display immediately. Since downsized and renamed which helps. I have never seen before the huge buildings to the right of the photo. They look very grand and I'm supposing they could be hotels or, maybe, blocks of purpose-built apartments....very smart either way. The occupants must have a terrific view of the river and bridge from their balconies/windows. What a complete contrast to thamesweb's black and white photograph. Did you take this yourself qezkc, or is it a postcard view? If I'd taken this shot, I'd think about selling it to a postcard company!! There are even some ducks and drakes to complete the picture. Would you gain entry to these new buildings down Brocas Street? I'm not too familiar with the Eton side of Windsor Bridge?

They're actually on the other side of the High Street to Brocas Street - you can gain entry to them from Kingstable Street in Eton. Unfortunately I can't take the credit for taking the picture. It's one I found on a website called pbase.com and was taken by a photographer called Ron Anderson.

Posts: 207 (06/30/08 01:01:56) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Taking another look at this picture of the newer buildings on the Eton side of the Thames, I've noticed a distinct lack of 'chimneys/chimney pots'...I suppose it's a sign of the times, what with central heating, underfloor heating and airconditioning. I suppose in years to come, there won't even be rooftops either. I see, too, the tables are 'laid', ready for diners at the House on the Bridge Restaurant. In thamesweb's pic., to the left, there's a building with a sign, but I can't make out the lettering...perhaps that was an inn/public house, maybe? It's on the other side of the road and in Eton, but perhaps someone can make it out. Also, on the roof of the 'Husted' house, there are letters or wording, picked out in the roof tiles....to me it looks like 'A Morit...' maybe it's not actually 'in' the roof tiles, but an advertising hoarding? Let's hope the House on the Bridge building lasts for a bit longer??

You can just make it out in the colour photo too - it's the cream coloured building on the far left. I think it is an advertising hoarding on the top of the Husted building - I can't make out what it says either, though it might say "Mobil..." Incidentally, thamesweb mentioned in an earlier post that he's heard that the restaurant had run into some difficulties recently. It seems he could be right, as Monty's - which is on the other side of the bridge in Eton but owned by the same people I believe - has now closed down. The House on the Bridge is still going strong though.
