I have recently been sent a picture by a second cousin who located me a few years ago due to my questions on this forum. She asked me if I knew the identity of anybody in this picture that she found among the belongings of Phyllis Rodway who wrote this. http://theroyalwindsorforum.yuku.com/topic/2200/Old-Shops-and-Houses-Facing-Windsor-Castle#.VWsRlkaPzCY.
Phyllis was a daughter of my great uncle George Henry Kirtland (1874-1956), who, among other things, was a horse-drawn cab-driver. In his retirement he was supposed to have has a job at the castle that had 'something to do with the keys'. Cousin wrote to the castle archives but was told that there was no record of anyone of that name on in their records. Apparently from information gained from letters written by Phyliss, at one period George had a 'lovely house in park' by the Datchet road ( italics from memory). Therefore it seems to me that George may have worked at the castle at some time in spite of the apparent paucity in records..My cousin thought that one of the boys in the picture was my uncle Roy (on the left). Though there is a resemblance, and, the boy to his right could be his older brother Kenny, I can not be sure. I wondered if there are enough Windsorians of sufficient age and locality who use this forum to identify anybody in the picture or say exactly where it was taken.
If the picture has my late uncle Roy in it, would take an educated guess that it was taken not far from Oxford Road or Spital.
Please excuse posting this link https://thekirtlandofwindsor.wordpress.com/upon the Windsor forum.
spite of many attempts at using Yuku software over the past three
years I have had very little success at posting pictures and hope
that the use of this link is permissible.
