Your print is a bit washed out so you can't really see the Parish Church in the background. The cortege is pretty much outside the old GPO building. Do you know, I thought I'd read it (well, the history bit anyway) from start to finish. But obviously not - I still keep finding gems - or being linked to gems I've missed. Like royal funerals... I hesitate now to post the other photos of QV and family at Windsor that were with this one. I even got the website owner's permission to do so, so I could share them with the forum. I was also going to tell anyone (who didn't know already) about Matty (Matthias) Cooper - gypsy and head "Ratcatcher of Windsor Castle" about whose life Windsor Library is mounting an exhibition in June. I could have shown you a watercolour of gypsies done by Princess Victoria , for those who did not know she had a fondness for them. However, so that I do not waste further posting space, perhaps someone could tell me if they have already seen photos of Prince Albert's Christmas present table in 1860, or the bed and Blue Room he died in, or Bertie and Louise's children's play in 1854, or the programme for a Command Performance of films and music in 1897 (including Monsier Taffart's Calculating and Performing Dogs?) Not to mention, in full colour mind you, Queen Victoria's Tea House, complete with beautiful chimneys and covered in wisteria? The exhibition at Windsor Library is Queen Victoria's Gypsies: Mattie Cooper, Royal Ratcatcher - I think around 15th/16th June. Apparently the Queen, when she was still Princess Victoria, was told by a gypsy that she would be Queen of England, in the tent of Eliza Cooper, the wife of Mattie (Matthias) who apparently only did palms, would not do cards (?) nor do a reading on the Sabbath. Victoria had encountered gypsies while visiting relatives - presumably working/visiting their estate - and did the charming watercolour above, dated 1836 - just before Queenhood fell on her. Gypsies/Romanies had a reputation for the ratcatching occupation; apparently they were collected (by hand or with dogs) and sold for rat/ dog fights. Ugh. Jack Black (?) was Royal Ratcatcher in London during her reign, so I surmise this must have been at Buckingham Palace. Mattie Black was obviously the Royal Ratcatcher at Windsor Castle. (My first thought was - why not dogs or cats - but of course, the rats would be killed and couldn't be sold for fighting) The small picture is the only one I could find of Mattie, though the library exhibition will doubtless have others - and will also be able to sort the actual from the embellished stories I've found and related above. Posts: 4313 15-Apr-2009 03:05 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	These photos come from a collection of nearly 300 pictures on a website called "Queen Victoria: Images of her World" edited by Stephen Bishop who clearly has a passion for, and sound knowledge of the Queen's life, and is happy to answer questions if you contact him. Many of the photos you may have seen before, but it is an interesting collection nevertheless, so enjoy them again. There is even the one photo I have ever seen of QV smiling - and wearing a hat like the ones that used to hang in a glass case on Caleys' staircase. (We could do with those for the Museum...I hope they are not at Tinker's Lane, or worse still, sold.) Here is the link: http://www.btinternet.com/~sbishop100 Here are Bertie and P. Louise 10th February, 1854 in a drama at the Castle called "Seasons". It is so like the ones of the princesses Elizabeth and Margaret at about the same age. The Queen and P. Beatrice's family eating in the Castle, 1895. Look at the little one's cushion to raise him up - we all do that! This is the bed in the Blue Room where Prince Albert died - I can see black mourning feathers, (or are they palms?) and presumably some floral decoration? Although just an old-fashioned, official photograph to us, it is poignant if you think of the Queen sitting in the room, perhaps touching the bed, where her beloved husband died... And more cheerfully, here is his Christmas Present Table, Christmas 1860. Wonder what he got? Here is the programme for the 1897 Command Performance at the Castle showing films, (well, cinematographe pictures) playing music and being entertained by the performing dogs of M. Taffarte. An evening to remember... Here, a century earlier, is another " England's Rose" ... and finally, the delicious Queen Victoria's Tea House with the marvellous chimneys and full-colour wisteria.
