We have received a photograph of a dolls house based on Y Bwthyn Bach (The Little House) in the grounds of Royal Lodge. Does anyone have any more information
for the owner about who made it and when?

The Little House at Royal Lodge as Dolls House
|
It was with great pleasure that I viewed your web.page about "The little house at Royal Lodge". I very recently bought a dolls house that was advertised in the Wiltshire times newspaper. It was advertised as "Princess Elizabeth's little house from 1936-37." The dolls house is in great condition and is made of wood and mounted on a green wooden stand. It retains it's original steel framed windows and wooden doors. The original wall paper and wooden floors were very worn and wisely or not, I've already redecorated it with period wallpapers. It contains four room (each in different original coloured wallpaper; green, yellow, red and blue.) It also have a hallway with a wooden stair case, plus two original wooden fire places. My house is made by "Triang" (also known as "Tri-ang") with their label stuck in the back, left hand corner of the house.
I would love to know more about this dolls house and also if possible get in tough with the lady, who has her similar dolls house on display on your web.page. It would have been great to know exactly what the original "Little house at Royal Lodge" looked like inside, so that I could recreate the exact colours and styles inside my dolls house. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contact information removed as spam precaution. |

Museum of Childhood article
The above link is interesting. It is pretty accurate bar the suggestion that the Little House is in the grounds of Windsor Castle. This is not accurate, the Little House is in the grounds of Royal Lodge which is on the east side of Windsor Great Park near Bishop's Gate, some three miles from Windsor Castle. |

We have received the following email from Queensland, Australia:
Hello---I was fascinated to see a photo of the little dolls house. Royal Lodge - The Little House My sister and I were given one (exactly the same) at Christmas 1946 when we were six and seven years of age. This happened just prior to us leaving England for Malaya. Our little house has had a chequered career and has travelled widely... My memory of that Xmas morning was one of pure delight as it had its own battery powered lights and parents woke us up early to see it all lit up. We do not know of its history unfortunately. Our father was Welsh and I suspect it was given to us out of sentimental reasons. When we grew up it passed on to nieces and nephews (alternately being used as a farm shed, parking garage etc). Eventually it came back to my sister where her grandson delighted in its use and now my grand-daughter has the house. Her mother is endeavouring to renovate it back to its original interior/exterior and would love to be able to share ideas/knowledge. I am pretty certain that the house originated either in Wales or north country --- we have family in both areas and one who has only recently moved out of Macclesfield. Sally from sunny Queensland, Australia If anyone would like to contact Sally about her Dolls House, please email editor@thamesweb.co.uk and we will pass on the message or you would be welcome to post your comments or questions here. |

The Little House Presentation in 1932 - story updated
|
I am absolutely delighted to report that I have been contacted by Jean Sharman, née Blake, who was closely involved with the presentation of the Little House
to The Duke and Duchess of York in 1932 on behalf of the Welsh people. Here is a photograph of Jean at the time in her traditional Welsh costume.

'Ty Bach' or 'Y Bwthyn Bach'?
|
I have received the following about the naming of the Little House from Richard in Swansea, to whom our thanks.
When the little thatched cottage which now stands in Windsor Park was built for the then Princess Elizabeth's sixth birthday it was originally proposed to name it "Ty Bach". |

Y BWTHYN BACH | ||
|
In 1932 the people of Wales presented this little house to Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose. My Uncle Mr Lawence was the manager of the
furnishing store inWales, that supplied the furniture for the house. My Aunt Nellie Lawence my mothers sister made all the curtains and cushions for the
house.
In 1937 I was born and as a gift my aunt bought up from the shop a small chair she said it had been made as a spare for the Bwthyn Bach in case any were damaged in transit as was the house itself a small fire due to a crash. What a lucky girl i was with my princess chair. I still have my chair 72years later .Owing to my sister and i and my four children and six grandchildren and one great grandson the chair has had to be re upholstered ,but is still used daily for children watching tv.Its a heavy chair and has bun feet on the front, originally autumn shades of leaves in un cut moquette material. |

How wonderful! What a great family heirloom. I wonder if the original material was saved somewhere, just for the record. If I might have a photo or two? It
would make a great addition to my story about the house. Thanks for contacting the forum.
Edit: I have since received these pictures for which our thanks. Apparently the original material is no more but we are hoping for more information about the story behind the furniture for The Little House 'Y Bwthyn Bach' at Royal Lodge. ![]() ![]()
