I need to rant about litter! I was on an evening walk recently and walked through Alexandra Park - it was strewn full of litter everywhere. I went further on to the river, and even more litter. Fast food packaging left on benches, picnic rubbish left in the grass, yet there are rubbish bins everywhere. What should be an area of beauty was ruined with rubbish.
I was in the King Edwards Court area the other day, and a group of 3 teenage school girls in green uniforms were walking in front of me. One, after finishing her drink, casually tossed the cup on the ground. An elderly couple next to me called out to her and scolded her - but the trio of girls just laughed it off in total disrespect. To help support the elderly couple I picked up the cup and disposed of it in the rubbish bin (which was right in front of us.) The elderly couple thanked me. The teenage girls did not seem bothered in the least.
I always (unintentionally) seem to end up walking along the South Path next to Ward Royal during lunch time for the Windsor Boys School boys - it never fails but some of them regularly throw their wrappings from fast food (usually Subway) on the path or into the gardens of Ward Royal.
I would be mortified if I were with people who tossed their rubbish on the ground. I realize there are some cultural differences between the UK and US, but is this really the norm and is it considered acceptable? Maybe the idea is that someone will come around behind them and clean up as part of their job?
I know in Windsor there are fines for throwing cigarette butts on the ground, I'm assuming there are fines for other types of rubbish. And if so, an employee could more than earn their salaries by fining people who violate the rules. I don't know if any of these rules are regularly enforced? I see the parking enforcement out all the time issuing tickets to parking violators - do they do the same to people carelessly throwing or leaving rubbish behind? If not, why not?
Ok, I think I'm finished with my little rant now, sorry....
