I have looked at your website and one or two editions of The Streets of Windsor, but my research of maps and directories in the Windsor Reference Library have madea fewmatters less clear-cut.
1. Your information suggests that Una Terrace was in Goswell Lane.
My research of the Marshalls directories suggest that at one point the section of Goswell Road that was demolished at the time of the Ward Royal development was once called Goswell Lane and that this section was renamed Goswell Road circa 1910, leaving the bit leading off Arthur Road and up to Goswell Hill as Goswell Lane.
I'm convinced therefore that Una Terrace - a row of 12 houses - was situated on the western side of Goswell Road between the Arthur Road and Grosvenor Place junctions.
I know that the section of Goswell Road still in existence runs from the Arthur Road roundabout to Barry Avenue and the river.
2. I believe that most of the dwellings in the demolished area - covering Grosvenor Place, Edward Square, the eastern side of Goswell Road and Denmark Street - were once only listed in Marshalls as Victoria Cottages. These cottages were built before the houses in Una Terrace.
3. Alma Cottages have been listed in one source as being in Alma Road, in another they have been listed as beingin Charles Street. I know thatCharles Street and Clarence Clumpwere essentially 2 connecting lanes that ran between Clarence Road and Alma Road, cutting through South Place behind Oxford Road East at some point. The lanes made an arc-like shape, similar to but not symmetrical to Clarence Crescent. There were 28 houses in Charles Street and 6 cottages in Clarence Clump. I think that theAlma Cottages were additionallysomewhere along these two lanes.
4. There seems to have been other housesin this area such as Charles Place, Russell Courtand Charles StreetCottages, which I understand were off Charles Street behind Peascod Street andOxford Road East.
5. Sydney Place does not feature on the map in 1881, and on the 1897 map it appears that it was not linked to Edward Square (as your website map and a 1932 map suggests) Instead it appears that it was more or less situated at the back of Peascod Street and the directoriesin the 1900s seemed to say that it was accessed from 105, Peascod Street. Was this by way of Creek's Passage?
I think there were 6 dwellings in Sydney Place and this area is now where Kings Edwards Court is - whichGoswell Lane and Goswell Place was knocked down for.
Also, I know Clewer Lane was renamed Oxford Road at the time of the 1869 realignment. But someone has told me the the numbering has changed. For example, 181 Oxford Road - which is stillstanding in Oxford Road West - was 2, Clewer Lane. Is this true? If so, whenabouts did this change happen?
I would appreciate any clarifying information in respect of these matters.
Thank you,
JD
