Posts: 979 (04/15/08 00:55:55) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Residents and visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to help celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's 82nd birthday at 12 noon Monday April 21 when the Royal Borough stages its traditional 21-gun salute in the shadow of Windsor Castle. The 'Happy Birthday' greeting will be launched by the Mayor, Cllr Leo Walters, who will fire the first of the council's mini cannons, under the experienced eye of borough bombardier John Matthews. Also present will be the Mayoress Mrs Margot Walters and Deputy Mayor Cllr Dorothy Kemp. The event - at Windsor Castle's The Long Walk, near the Brook Street entrance - is always popular with children, some of whom may be invited by the Mayor to play a very real part in the birthday tribute by helping to fire the cannons. I enjoyed the video of the French Prime Minster's recent visit. Had Castle Hill been covered with sand to prevent the horses and carriages slipping???

Posts: 994 (04/17/08 14:28:06) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Herewith a short video of the Royal Standard (the 'Birthday' Standard) flying over the castle on 9th April 2005 on the occasion of Prince Charles's wedding to Camilla Parker-Bowles. I hope the huge size of this very special flag comes across. It is used only on rare occasions such as the Queen's Birthday (actual and official), Garter Day and on other state occasions. It measures 38 feet (11.58 metres) across by 19 feet (5.79 metres) so the wind must be within limits otherwise the Round Tower would be flying off to Heathrow! It is rather interesting looking at old pictures of the castle, be they photos or paintings. The castle always seems to have an overlarge flag flying... I am sure this is the reason why. Which Monarch first used a Royal Standard and was he English??

Great flag, wherever you are in the world. The Stars and Stripes flag is great too, but, it doesn't quite match up to our Union Jack...I hope you fly the flag on St. George's Day!
