Well done to all who maintain it. I am preparing a (small) history of a particular house on the High Street in Windsor. I have the 1851-1901 census information and hope to soon see the actual deeds of the building. I have looked through the photos on this site and for some reason the building is always just out of shot! Can you recommend any other sites or places to try for information? I haven't gone through the whole of this site yet, so may turn up a reference to it somewhere. Also are there trade or professional directories which I could access either on-line or in person? At least three of the residents of the house were doctors of some form, and it would be interesting to try and find if they practised from home or at one of the hospitals. Basically, any ideas or pointers would be gratefully received! Andrea

There aren't any, are there? I have a good few hundred more images of Windsor from all eras, but in particular since WWII. Slowly (necessarily!) but surely, these will be added to the site where they are of real interest but time is never on my side to do all that I would like. Of course there are no other websites of this calibre with pictures and info on Windsor. I just wondered if anyone had experience of a similar search and knew of other ... sources ... that ... might be ... helpful ... I'll stop digging now! The house I am looking at is 9 / 9a High Street. Currently it has an opticians, Gregory & Seeley in the shop at the front, and is office space and a church upstairs. It is an incredible building and has been very well restored and maintained inside. The basement is a real treat in itself! At the back there is a carpark and a modern extension, but what I would really like to know is what it looked like when it was a family home. Presumably it had a back garden which would have backed on to Batchelors Acre where there is a newish development of offices. I would be interested to know about the archway that leads to the back of the High Street up parallel with the park. I'm not describing it very well, but I'm not a local! Also, where did the gravestones come from? Did it have a garden at the front too? In reality it doesn't have to be a photo of no.9 itself, just an example of the houses in the street, but I'm not sure if they were all the same, terraced, or individual houses. I quite understand about the time it takes to do these things, when you are interested in something it is easy to over-commit yourself and find you haven't the time to do everything as fast as you might want. There is no rush, the house isn't going anywhere I hope and I will probably get to learn a lot more once I have seen the deeds. You are right about a dearth of pictures of that side of the street. Quite simply the photographer would have wanted to sell as many prints as possible and that means taking pictures of something used by, or visited by, a lot of people. Hence the hotel, the church, Guildhall and the castle. The only chance is that the building features 'by accident' as below. With luck your building features in the background. I might have a surprise for you in that I have an overhead view. Yes! A view from a tower crane. Sadly this evening I have no way of scanning the possible shot so it must wait. It is only 30 years old and was taken when the developments you mention were in progress. You mention gravestones. I bet these came from the Old Burial Ground on the higher level from Bachelors Acre, (NB no 't') now a grassed area. My 1934 Kelly doesn't list no 9. It jumps from 8 to 10, but in 1953 the occupants were W Crispe, Opticians, and the Christian Spiritualist Sanctuary with Mrs Crispe living above the shop. I will keep my eyes open for other views.

As the 1934 Kelly goes from 8 to 10 is it safe to assume that is because there was no business there, just residential? Thanks for your on-going help! Andrea

I think the simple truth is they had no information and so left it out. It might be that it was in the process of being converted and was empty but even then I would have thought the property would have been mentioned. Yes, you can just see the house, set back from the others. It is the one with the darker roof and dormer window at the top of the picture. Did you mean that this picture was taken when the big office was built on the corner of Madeira Walk? We guess that was 1990ish is that correct? Thanks for your continued help! Andrea

I suppose 1989 is about right. Anyone supply a more accurate date?
