thanks exred. I've had a look at the site too. I thought it very interesting, and spotted the name of my Mother's family's school, Eton Porney.
She told me that her name and that of her sister, my late aunt, were on the board as having been two of many pupils who 'passed the scholarship' to the
Grammar School. I'd like to visit the school, which I think is just across Windsor Bridge (?) and take a look at 'that board'..perhaps thamesweb
could give me directions, thankyou. I also recognised the name 'Pardoe' from one of the contributions to the site.

Eton Porney is along Eton High Street, isn't it?
This is an interesting discovery, but I might have to close the thread if we get onto matters non-Windsorian and this is, very literally, borderline! |

'Borderline'. | ||

Yes, I take your point thamesweb. Is there somewhere on the Forum Site a boundary map for Windsor? I've seen one somewhere but can't remember where.
It's hard to imagine where Windsor starts and finishes. Dedworth is out of Windsor I know, but I always assumed it came within the Windsor boundaries, you
know, Clewer Within and Clewer Without...which I can honestly say I have never understood. I think maybe, taking a look at a map would help me to understand it
all. What does 'Within and Without' mean - boundarywise? The answer is probably very simple, but it needs explaining to me!!
Another question you may be able to help me with - my late Parents-in-law are buried in the Roman Catholic part of the cemetery near Stag Meadow. On a recent visit, I asked my husband what will happen when the graves reach the boundary wall. (He'd told me that the cemetery was 'Crown Land'). So, once all the spaces have been taken, will the boundary wall have to move, or, perhaps the Council might have to ask The Queen for permission to use more land? It's an ongoing question between the two of us which we seem to ask every time we visit the cemetery. Perhaps there's more land earmarked for future use as a cemetery? |

The quick answer to the cemetery situation is that a new cemetery has been established across the road from the Oakley Court Hotel.
As to Windsor boundaries I do not know off the top of my head precisely where the boundaries are other than to say that the river plays its part to the north. Clewer is quite large and includes the castle - The Curfew Tower was once known as the Clewer (Clivore) Tower - and the Parish of Winkfield features beyond the park. I will put the subject on the list and seen what crops up. |
