St Georges Cottages - Dedworth |

Bit of a long shot but I wondered if anyone had any pictures of St George's cottages in Dedworth. There were two cottages down a little dirt track which was called St Georges Avenue. I believe they were demolished in the mid 50's. They were opposite the post office in Dedworth. There is a off licence (Unwins ?) and and another shop where the cottages were. Like I said bit of a long shot .... fingers crossed |

Some time ago ,a friend of mine allowed me to copy a photo of the original Dedworth green post office.It was taken about 1902 and showed his grandmother,standing outside the shop and entrance to St Georges cottages.I passed the photo on to a member of his family I think she put it on this forum,so you may find it under "Dedworth Green Post Office".If like me you can not find it,I still have the original copy.The lady in the photo is Mrs Slaughter(wife of Gentleman Jim).His Grandson Jim is happy for me to put the photo on this forum ,as well as one of foreman of bricklayers Gentleman Jim as he was known,at the beginning of building of the Windsor Police Station circa 1903.(Windsor Arts Centre). I am asking around to see if anyone has photos of the cottages and will let you know if anything turns up. |

I don't recall such a picture on this forum. There was once a web site purely about Dedworth but I haven't seen it for a long time. Perhaps it was used
there. Anyway, I would love a digital image by email, as big as possible, and I will feature it here along with any others that you can find. I DO love old
Windsor pictures! Thanks a lot for your interest.

Thanks for this picture. Very interesting. Judging by the clothing I would date this at about 1880, but I am no expert! The National Archives Census should
help in dating it more accurately if we could find out the children's ages at that address.

The person who supplied the photo,said the man in the photo is his Grandfather,Gentleman Jim Slaughter.judging by his knowledge of the family he thinks it was taken about 1903.His Father was born in 1907 and he is not in the photo.More to follow.Bob. |

The photo would of been taken in 1903 ish. The baby is my great aunt Emily. She was born in July 1902. The others in the photo are : (back row - left to right) James (Jim) Slaughter - 1892 = 1968, James Slaughter - 1856 = 1944, Ada Slaughter - 1893 = 1984, Jemima (nee Hine) Slaughter - 1868 = 1955, Emily Slaughter (the baby) - 1902 = 1989, Elsie Slaughter - 1896 = 1985, Nellie Slaughter - 1894 = 1973. (front row) William (Bill) Slaughter - 1898 = 1977, Mary Slaughter - 1900 = 1986. James and Jemima had three more children : Edith Slaughter (my nan) - 1904 = 2003 John (Jack) Slaughter - 1907 = 1991 Rose Slaughter - 1909 = 1982 Once again Bob many thanks |

Really great stuff! I am delighted that this image of a Windsor family has been so fully documented. There are too many millions of photographs of unnamed
people knocking around so to have these names is hugely valuable. I hope the names are all written on the back of the picture!!! (And that a few copies are
made too!)

For what it's worth. When I was a boy in the Twenties in Albert Street, my grandfather was very friendly with a Mr And Mrs Jim Slaughter who lived in the
first house on the right past what is now King George's old people's Club.
He was a foreman BRICKLAYER and had built the house that they were living in. They took a shine to us three boys and we regarded them as uncle & aunt Probably useless information |

Mayor of Bexley, your information is far from useless I'm sure, and another coincidence is, my sister-in-law, June, late of 16 Albert Street, is in contact with your brother Ted now. She's just emailed me saying that he lives not far from her in The West Country. I think I realise who 'teresa' is too....???? |

Hello Mayor.
You are quite right about the thirties.I have just spoken to their nephew Jim,He confirms that the house was built by his father Jack or John and Jim. Jim that you knew can be seen in the photo of St Georges Cottages,as a young lad.If you read Teresa's reply,you can see that she has named her family. I have some more photos to post,including Jack and his wife Eva in about 1953 at a wedding at the Dedworth Social Club Regards Bob ps. Jims nickname was Moulder.

Was that a 'Varney built' house? Certainly looks like it if you mean the west side. First house on the east side would be the one that originally had a
very deep, often waterlogged, basement garage, with a steep driveway, built rather later in the 60s I think.
PS It's Mr Mayor!!!
