In the Olden days!! question. | ||

Does anyone remember a l o n g time ago on the Thames at Windsor, there was a single-deck passenger boat, with a canopy, and powered by an engine, (not a
steamer). A relative drove one of these smaller boats up and down the river, and we're talking circa. 1937-39ish...he would go from quite close to where
the small punt, which ferried people across to the Brocas and back, was tied up. Thanks for any help or photos.

There were two riverboats, Angler, and Humble, which looked like small versions of the Empress of India and Windsor Belle. These may not be the two that you
have in mind, but I remember them from the fifties which is not so long after the dates you have in mind. The forward cabin had wicker seats for the
passengers. They could have been electric originally.

Thankyou, thamesweb. I emailed Ben and he thinks that 'Humble' appears on another of your links on the forum. Perhaps she's the boat with the
wicker seats you mention. He sent me a copy of a picture of 'Jeff', which he thinks may, originally, have been named 'Windsor Two'...(there is
another boat called 'Mutt', would you believe?).

I think it was Ro who identified it, but I seem to have lost my notes on that card. Sorry for being away so long. I've been working out in Japan. |

We have received the following photograph from Pat Maisey.

Thamesweb, in Beryl Hedges' 'Around Windsor in old photographs', on page 96, there is on the bottom half of the page, a photograph of two small
pleasure craft, at Windsor. Also, walking towards the camera is a man who from the photo. looks as if he might have only half his arm.....I'm thinking
about Tony's Uncle here, so if possible, could you, if you have a copy of her book, please take a look at the photo, perhaps enlarge it, then if you think
I'm right, maybe you could print the photo on the forum......I think these are the same two small boats you've mentioned already. I look forward to
your thoughts on this. Thanks.

I need to find an original of this postcard because the image in Ms. Hedges book is copyright. In any event it would not enlarge usefully as it is
'screened' for print. But I think the boats are the two I have mentioned above. I can't really remember any others of that design on the prom at
Windsor.
