I am trying to find out if any of the Windsor Police Records still exist. My Grandfather was a Policeman during the period 1885- 1910. His number was PC 11: Name James Collins. Have tried the records office in Reading, Kew and the Thames Valley Police Museum, Windsor Castle Archives, Windsor Library, and the Met. and drawn a black. I have been told that the Windsor Police did not join the Berkshire Constabulary until 1947 but the info on Windsor did not get transferred to them.

I have phone the telephone number and the Chief Librarian thinks she might know of a web site to find out more info., if she finds it? she will phone me. On alight er none when I phone the MET, I suggested that they put one of their detectives on the case. Her reply was that they were far to busy to do this, then I laughed and and so did she saying that I had caught her out. Best regards Thom

Posts: 8 ( 3-Oct-2008 02:28 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Helo BobB, You gave me the-phone. number of Reading History Society, a very nice lady phoned me this morning and gave me the number of an author of several books on the police forces in this country. He had a check and said that he had no records of the Windsor Police and thinks I have exhausted all of the channels on this subject. It seems such a shame as my Great Grandfather had 5 brothers two these went in to the Navy as boys and ended up as Chief Petty Officers, one joined the Police in Reading and retired after 44 years as an Inspector, one joined the Army and retired after 22 years as a Colour Sergeant in Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, the last one was a Cooper in Maidenhead. I have military recorders on the serving men except my Great Grandfather only have what has been past down to me. Thank you for your help I think you must know how I feel. Best regards Thom.

Posts: 37 ( 3-Oct-2008 09:24 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Sorry to hear that you are no further forward.The only thing I can think of now,is writing a letter to the local papers,explaining as you did here.There are a lot of people reading their letter pages.There may be nobody who knows about the records,but with that many people,someone should have other places to try.If you are looking through old records,I found a record of a family name,which srarted with H.I spent two years searching,to no avail.When I had another look,Windsor was spelt with the same H.Once I found this out I found the family beginning with W straight away.I now read records in a completely different way. BobB. p.s Windsor Library hold copies of the local papers on film ,going back to those years.You may find something there.The staff are very good and will help if you have never used the film readers before.You can phone and book some time there if you are coming from outside Windsor. I have had a look at the Windsor and Eton films for 1909,1910 and 1947.I am afraid to say there was no mention of where the records went,that I could find.In the 1909 Government Ispectors report, Captain H.D.Terry reports that there were 16 Constables,4 Sergeants and a chief officer,in the New Windsor Force.The average net cost of Police in ordinary duties was £102.00 per constable. 3rd April 1947,there is an article Headlined...Royal Borough Police Join The County Constabulary... Reading the article,it appears to have been a government decision,not warmly greeted by Windsor and the Police.There was no mention of records. Regards BobB.
